The front handguard has been sanded (ruining the finger grips on the sides) and isn't worth refinishing. I have the old wood from the gun and plan on stripping the varnish and refinishing it. In summary, the wood is all original NOS with a linseed oil finish. It is possible that it has slightly shrunk after 70 years, but ill fitting grips on WWII Thompsons are not terribly uncommon, especially slight gaps in M1 grips when they changed it from the 1928 style without the 'step.' The grip in the photos is a NOS 'M' (Strombeck-Becker) made grip. I'll post photographs when I return home in a couple of weeks of an M1/M1A1 grip (Imade by Savage) that is so large, I have trouble getting my hand around it. M1 rear grips vary in contour depending on the maker and particular run of grips. They range from smooth and rounded to flat and slab sided. Think about the various shaped M1 rear grips seen on the guns. WWII Thompson wood, especially during the M1/M1A1 production, was not fitted to the individual guns. It is not as shiny when you handle the gun in person. The reflection is from the linseed oil finish sheen. It is extras I have had for years and the finish is many coats of boiled linseed oil. The current wood on the gun is all original WWII NOS Thompson wood. The sling swivel moritises had also been filled in, professionallly. The original wood on the gun had been sanded and varnished by the police department that owned it.

If you have been looking for an unmessed with original WWII M1 Thompson with early features, this is your gun. The gun is currently in Wisconsin on a Form 3 and is fully transferable to a qualified buyer. I will be unable to take additional pictures of the internals for another few weeks, but will make them available to a serious buyer. The barrel is in excellent shiny condition with strong lands and grooves. I didn't have an opportunity to photograph the internal parts, but they are all original and parkerized. there is no corrosion or pitting present. The only significant wear on the finish is on the left side of the receiver nose area near the ejector, which appears to be storage wear. The small speckles present on parts of the metal are lint from a towel that was used to wipe the exces oil from the gun prior to photographing. The gun was thoroughly cleaned by me for photographing. When these pictures were taken the gun had just been cleaned after having 150 rounds fired through it. I can find no other markings on the gun except the small Savage S on the receiver and grip frame. There are the GEG inspection stamps on the left front of the receiver and the underside of the grip frame under the butt stock. Interarms was an importer, but I can find no import markings on the gun. I had to clean the original long-term storage cosmoline from the firing pin and trigger group internal parts. All the internal parts are Savage/Stevens NOS parts.

The parkerizing is a nice even gray green color typical of original WWII finish. The gun has the original arsenal parkerizing and a mismatched grip frame. the gun was fired a couple of times and put away for the past 45 years. I have examined the gun inside and out and it is an original late WWII or Post War arsenal rebuild Savage made M1 Thompson that the police department purchased from Interarms, Alexandria, Va in 1964. I visited their agency and was able to put them in touch with a Dealer from Wisconsin that made an offer and was able to obtain the gun. Louis at the TATA Exhibit display we were approached by an indidual from a suburban Chicago, Illinois police department that wanted some information on a Thompson that they had that they were thinking of selling.
